Generate Part Centroid File (aka Pick-and-Place) from Gerber Data

As an engineer at SuperPCBA, I frequently utilize Fusion 360, a comprehensive design software developed by Autodesk. Today, with the assistance of Ed Robledo from the Fusion 360 family, let’s discuss how to generate a Part Centroid File (also known as Pick-and-Place) from Gerber data using Fusion 360.

About Fusion 360

Fusion 360 is a comprehensive design software developed by Autodesk, primarily used for 3D modeling, CAD (Computer-Aided Design), CAM (Computer-Aided Manufacturing), CAE (Computer-Aided Engineering), PCB design, and engineering drawing. It is a cloud-based subscription software, cross-platform compatible, running on both Windows and macOS systems, and supports partial functionality in web browsers.

Generate Part Centroid File (aka Pick-and-Place) from Gerber Data

In this video presentation, Ed Robledo demonstrates how to create manufacturing files using Fusion 360 to ensure accurate file generation. Here are the key steps:

  1. Check Layer Stackup and Via Depth Stackup: Review the layer stackup and via depth stackup in the “Layers” tab to understand the design expectations.
  2. Real-time Design Rule Checker: Fusion 360 features a real-time design rule checker that continuously monitors DRC violations. After running a DRC check, review the error list and make necessary changes.
  3. Enable Push and Show Violator: It is strongly recommended to enable push and show violator when designing circuit boards to ensure traces and vias adhere to your preferences.
  4. CAM Preview: The CAM preview provides a realistic 2D representation of the completed circuit board, allowing you to inspect both the top and bottom sides.
  5. Review Design Statistics: In the “Board” tab, you can review design statistics such as component count per layer, layer stackup, and hole count, which helps manufacturers provide accurate quotes.
  6. Export ODB++ File: You can also export an ODB++ file, one of the most commonly used data exchange formats in circuit board design and manufacturing.
  7. CAM Processor: The CAM processor offers flexibility in generating manufacturing files. Its output is divided into five primary sections, each containing multiple subsections. You can add layers to selected subsections using the layer option.
  8. Send Files: After processing the job, all files will be located in the directory you specified, ready to be sent to manufacturers.

Additionally, many manufacturers provide Eagle DRC files that can be loaded and used in Fusion 360. These files contain parameters such as preferred clearances, layer stackup, and distances, which should be followed to expedite circuit board production.

In addition to the summarized steps, viewers are encouraged to carefully watch Ed Robledo’s video for a quick and standardized use of Fusion 360 to Generate Part Centroid File (aka Pick-and-Place) from Gerber data.

Conclusion

In summary, Fusion 360 is a powerful and comprehensive design software suitable for professionals and enthusiasts in various design and manufacturing fields, offering a wide range of design, simulation, and manufacturing solutions.
